Beck’s, the largest family owned retail seed company in the United States and the third largest seed brand, and RAGT, a leading international seed breeder, announced a collaboration with Phytoform to develop next generation corn trait products using Phytoform’s proprietary CRE.AI.TIVE™ platform.
The collaboration will initially focus on optimizing whole-plant corn architecture to improve harvestable yield and productivity in major agricultural markets, including the United States, South America and, potentially, Europe.
Phytoform’s CRE.AI.TIVE platform uses artificial intelligence to identify and optimize targeted edits in a plant’s native control DNA, enabling precise fine-tuning of gene expression to deliver both simple and complex traits. By modulating when, where and how strongly genes are expressed, rather than introducing foreign DNA, the platform enables the development of improved crop varieties regulated similarly to conventionally bred crops in certain jurisdictions.
The project combines Phytoform’s AI powered crop development capabilities with Beck’s and RAGT’s corn breeding expertise, proprietary germ plasm and commercial market insight.
“Growers continue to need innovations that improve productivity and help them get more from every acre,” said Jon Bokmeyer, research manager at Beck’s. “This collaboration brings together advanced AI driven trait development with breeding expertise to accelerate the delivery of differentiated corn products that address real market needs.”
Corn remains one of the world’s most commercially important crops, with continued demand for improved yield, resilience and input efficiency. Optimizing plant architecture represents a significant opportunity to improve harvestable yield and overall crop performance.
“RAGT has a long history of combining breeding excellence with innovation to deliver strong genetic progress for growers,” said Sébastien Chatre, CEO of RAGT 2n. “By partnering with Beck’s and Phytoform, we are bringing together complementary strengths to accelerate the development of next-generation corn traits with relevance across global markets.”
“This collaboration demonstrates how AI can help unlock a new level of precision in crop improvement,” said Will Pelton, CEO of Phytoform. “By enabling targeted tuning of native gene expression, CRE.AI.TIVE gives breeders a powerful new way to address specific agronomic challenges while working within existing elite germ plasm.”
Unlike transgenic approaches, Phytoform’s technology works within the plant’s own genome to deliver highly targeted trait improvements while aligning with evolving regulatory and market preferences.
Phytoform’s CRE.AI.TIVE platform is crop-agnostic, creating future opportunities to apply the technology across additional species and trait challenges.
